Phillies rout Brewers despite Braun's big night

04/21/2009 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Pedro Feliz went 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBI, and two runs scored, while veteran Jamie Moyer pitched a solid six- plus innings as the Philadelphia Phillies routed the Milwaukee Brewers, 11-4, in the first game of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.

Jayson Werth and Chris Coste each had a pair of doubles for the Phillies, who have won two straight games. Werth had two RBI and Coste had one. Raul Ibanez went 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

The 46-year-old Moyer (2-1) allowed four runs on seven hits, while fanning two and walking one to collect the win. The southpaw is now 10-5 in 23 games against the Brewers in his career. Moyer was slated to pitch in Monday's game versus the Padres, but it was postponed due to rain.

Ryan Braun paced the Brewers offense with two homers and had a career night, stroking five hits in the tilt. Braun had all four RBI for Milwaukee, which has lost three of four.

Manny Parra (0-3) gave up five runs on seven hits during a four-inning start for the Brewers. He also struck out four and walked three.

Moyer allowed the first two runners to reach base in the seventh before being replaced on the hill by Chad Durbin. Durbin got Carlos McGehee to go down swinging before the game went into a rain delay for 1 hour, and 18 minutes.

Clay Condrey took the mound when play resumed. Braun's single scored Jason Kendall after Corey Hart grounded out. Prince Fielder was called out on strikes to end the inning, but not before Milwaukee cut the gap to 11-4.

Condrey and Jack Taschner pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth frame, respectively, to seal the victory for Philadelphia.

The Brewers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a solo homer from Braun. Moyer got the first two batters to go down on strikes, but Braun drove a 1-1 fastball over the right-field wall.

Philadelphia responded in a big way in the home half of the frame, putting up four runs on the board to go ahead 4-1 early. Shane Victorino walked, Chase Utley singled, and Ryan Howard walked to load the bases following Jimmy Rollins' groundout to lead off.

Werth doubled down the left-field line to knock in Victorino and Utley, and back-to-back singles from Ibanez and Feliz scored Howard and Werth, respectively. Parra got Coste to fly out and struck out Moyer to end the inning.

The Phillies extended their margin to 5-1 in the third on Feliz's first home run of the season. Feliz belted a 1-1 fastball over the right-field fence with two outs and nobody on.

Braun stroked his second homer of the contest in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 5-3. Braun hit a 0-1 changeup over the left-field wall with two outs to score McGehee, who singled.

Philadelphia opened the tilt up in the bottom half of the frame to take a commanding 10-3 lead. Jorge Julio took over on the mound for Milwaukee to begin the inning. With runners on the corners and one out, Coste grounded out softly to third baseman Bill Hall to knock in Ibanez from third. Moyer walked and Rollins singled to load the bases with two outs. After a Victorino single to center that knocked in Feliz, the Brewers replaced Julio with R.J. Swindle.

Utley kept the inning alive with a walk to force in Moyer. A wild pitch to Howard allowed Rollins to score, and a throwing error from catcher Jason Kendall brought home Victorino. Howard went down swinging to end the frame, but not before five runs crossed the plate.

The Phillies added a run in the sixth on Feliz's RBI-single as a light rain started to fall at the ballpark.

Texas joins Texas A&M and Kansas as locks after getting league win No. 11. Texas Tech greatly helped its own hopes and crippled OK State's with the two-point win Saturday. Is K-State the last reasonable hopeful? Could be an elimination match in Stillwater on Tuesday, at least for the Cowboys.

Texas Tech [18-11 (7-7), RPI: 44, SOS: 12] A critical two-point win over OK State leaves the Red Raiders with Baylor and at Iowa State left. Get both and the Red Raiders likely are good to go. Get one and there could be some interesting comparisons with a K-State team that could finish two or three games "ahead" of them in the standings but doesn't have any of the quality wins Texas Tech has. Not a lot in nonconference play (against Arkansas in Little Rock being the best win, by far) to lean on.

Oklahoma State [18-9 (5-8), RPI: 50, SOS: 35] Still without a road win, the Cowboys now need to win two on the road just to get to .500 in conference play. It's hard to recall a team (OK, other than Clemson) falling so precipitously from lock status to almost certainly out of the NCAAs at this point. There are wins to be had in the last three, including a very big home game against K-State on Tuesday, but this team is reeling. Can you tell the pressure to win is getting to them with the way the final possession played out at Texas Tech? There are some good nonconference performances to lean on, specifically beating Missouri State and Syracuse on neutral floors and Pitt in OK City, but if the Pokes don't right this very, very soon, that won't be enough.

Kansas State [20-9 (9-5), RPI: 56, SOS: 96] It pays to be in the Big 12 North. The nine league wins are Colorado (twice), Missouri (twice), Iowa State (twice), Baylor, Nebraska and (a good one against) Texas. That helps explain the middling computer profile. The win over USC is nice, but the nonconference leaves a lot to be desired. The game at OK State in Stillwater on Tuesday is huge, as it could KO the Cowboys and leave K-State with a home date against Oklahoma with which to work.
