Stamkos gets SO winner as Bolts down Panthers

03/14/2009 - Sunrise, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Steven Stamkos scored the lone goal of the shootout and added an assist in regulation as the Tampa Bay Lightning edged the Florida Panthers, 4-3, at BankAtlantic Center.

After a spirited, but scoreless overtime, Stamkos lit the lamp to give the Lightning the edge in the first round of the shootout. David Booth and Vincent Lecavalier then came up empty and Michael Frolik needed to score to keep the game alive for the Panthers, but Karri Ramo made a stick save and Tampa Bay claimed the victory.

Martin St. Louis had a goal and an assist, while Cory Murphy and Jeff Halpern also tallied for the Lightning, who were able to build off a 4-1 win at Toronto on Thursday.

Ramo was solid between the pipes stopping 34-of-37 shots for Tampa Bay.

Booth had two goals and a helper for Florida, which has dropped three straight and four of five overall. Frolik also netted a regulation goal.

Tomas Vokoun allowed three goals on 27 shots for the Panthers.

In the third period with the Panthers clinging to a 2-1 lead, the hosts got some insurance at 5:35. Booth, following up a line rush, backhanded the puck into the open net with Ramo out of position to make it a two-goal game.

St. Louis' 26th of the season with 6:18 left to play got the Bolts to within a goal. Then Halpern's redirection of a Richard Petiot attempt made its way just inside the left post to tie things at 3-3 with 3 1/2 minutes left on the clock. Neither team could light the lamp in regulation and the game went into overtime.

Frolik opened the scoring with 4:11 left in the first stanza when he took a drop pass from Booth and fired a wrist shot past Ramo.

The Panthers picked up a power-play goal with 2:49 remaining in the second when Booth's backhander from in close trickled across the goal line to make it a 2-0 game. However, Murphy tipped home St. Louis' shot a little over a minute later while on the man advantage to get the Lightning within one heading into the second intermission.

Game Notes

Florida will host Washington on Tuesday, while the Lightning hosts Toronto....The Panthers dropped to 18-9-6 at home this season...Booth's first of the contest was his 50th career goal...The Panthers were without defenseman Bryan McCabe, who is sidelined with an orbital bone fracture and center Nathan Horton with a torn tendon in his left finger...Lecavalier extended his point streak to seven games...Both teams have split six matchups this season.
